The millions of flex cycles that the belt and coating experiences during their working lives result in the eventual degradation of the coating conductivity. A planned maintenance schedule is necessary to ensure that the desired properties of the drive are maintained. To this end, the ASM-1 monitor measures surface conductivity by placing the instrument on the surface of the belt to be checked and pressing the green test button. 

The appropriate LED will then illuminate showing the conductivity from 1Kilohm to 1 Gig ohm per square or isolative. The monitor uses correctly spaced contact probes to 'A.S.T.M. Standard D-257' and has an accuracy of +/- 1/2 decade. The instrument is operated by a 9 volt battery providing approx. 40 hours of testing time.
