Welded On Profiles

TransDev timing belts with welded on profiles (e.g. with dogs or cams on the back of the belt) offer unlimited possibilities to the designer. The high levels of automation required today means the designer is often called upon to come up with an innovative solution.
Care must be taken to consider both the nature of the product to be transported and the purpose for doing so. TransDev offer a complete package of timing belts and many different profiles, making innovative solutions to separating, indexing and positioning applications possible.

Design guidelines

Belt Sections

The drive parameters must first be determined, thus establishing the belt pitch, belt length and pulley sizes. Profiles can be welded to any available pitch of timing belt. For transport applications, it is advisable to use BRECO® belts with PAZ (PAZ=nylon coating on the teeth). The nylon coating gives a reduced coefficient of friction, thus allowing better running and wear resistance when used in conjunction with slide beds.

Profiles selection

Both the type of product to be conveyed and the method of transportation will influence the choice of profiles. The following possibilities exist:

  • Standard profiles These profiles are injection moulded out of polyurethane. A selection of the most popular are shown on pages 158-159. Design around these if possible. Standard profiles can also be modified by drilling or grinding – please send a drawing with your requirements.
  • Profiles from sheet materialProfiles can be cut from polyurethane sheet material according to requirements. The following sheet thicknesses are available: 3, 5, 8, 10 and 20mm. Extremely complex designs can be manufactured in this way.
  • Special manufacture profilesShould you find that none of the standard profiles suit your application, we are able to machine profiles to your requirements; e-mail: sales@transdev.co.uk fo r a quotation.

Positioning the profiles over the toothform

The belt flexibility relies on the tooth gap. In order to maintain the belt flexibility around the pulleys, it is advisable to position profiles over the belt teeth.

Profile and belt pitch

If possible, the pitch of the profiles should equate to a whole number of pitches on the belt. If this is not possible, ensure that the sum of the profile pitches equals the required belt length.
